Every July, Americans everywhere start the month off strong with what many consider the holiday of the summer — the 4th of July. Also known as Independence Day, this holiday is a birthday party on steroids, complete with fireworks, cookouts, air shows, parades, and more. The 4th is always an incredible time in New York City, which is already known for its exuberant holiday celebrations (see our guides to New York City at Christmas and New Year’s).
This year, locations all across Manhattan will light up with 4th-themed fun. From the annual Macy’s fireworks to nighttime cruises and hot dog-eating contests, there’s no shortage of things for you, your friends, and your family to do for this year’s 4th of July. The day falls on a Tuesday this year, but don’t let that stop you from going all out.
Without further ado, here are the best 4th of July events on the Upper West Side and Manhattan this year.
For the 47th year in a row, Macy’s — the department store — will be putting on an awe-inspiring fireworks display on the 4th. Launching from five barges on the East River, this nearly half-hour extravaganza will light up the sky with red, white, and blue. There are over 60,000 shells waiting to be lit up, which will create unique, improbable effects; there is also a custom radio show prepared to go with the display. (You will need to tune into 1010Wins as the fireworks go off).
Beginning at around 9:25 pm the night of the 4th, you can watch this free spectacle from locations across Manhattan. Macy’s will release official viewing spots, too, as the day draws closer. Check here for the official list. NBC will also be streaming the fireworks display live.
This long-standing 4th of July tradition is something you cannot miss if you will be in New York City for the holiday. Join millions of New Yorkers in watching the sky become one with the American flag this year.
What better way to celebrate the birth of the United States than by cruising down the Hudson River, just as Washington crossed the Delaware? Sure, you’ll probably be much tipsier and having much more fun than Washington was, but still.
Circle Line runs some of the most popular 4th of July cruises in the city, which last for around four to five hours. This all-inclusive option starts before sunset and offers food and an open bar, as well as a live DJ; it offers guests an unforgettable 4th of July experience. From aboard the cruise, you’ll also be able to watch the fireworks display, giving you the best of both worlds. Starting at around $270 per person, this is a pricier option, but it will certainly be worth it.
A cheaper option is this 4th of July Brunch Cruise, in which you can buy a standard ticket for about $169. Offering panoramic skyline views, a four-course brunch, and bottomless mimosas, this two-hour experience offers the ultimate American vibe.
No matter which cruise you choose, they are sure to make this 4th of July a memorable one.
Closer to the Upper West Side is the Empire State Building 4th of July celebration, an unparalleled party on the 80th and 86th floors of New York City’s most famous building. Offering classic American hors d’oeuvres, a two-hour open bar, impossible views of New York City and the Macy’s fireworks, and a live DJ, this is absolutely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Book your tickets here.
Does any food scream 4th of July more than a hot dog? Nathan’s, the iconic chain, would argue no. Every year on the 4th, hot dog enthusiasts gather on Coney Island — about a forty-minute drive from the Upper West Side — to watch more intense hot dog enthusiasts compete. It’s one of the most legendary eating competitions in the world, which is all the more reason why you should head out to Coney Island to see it.
Competitors have ten minutes to eat as many hot dogs as possible. The current reigning champion, Joey Chestnut, managed to eat 76 in the time given — an almost unfathomable amount. So, if you’re a fan of hot dogs, head out to Coney Island around 10 am this 4th of July for this free spectacle.
Last but not least, you should consider spending your 4th of July enjoying another American tradition — a great BBQ. Grilling and barbecuing are only allowed in Central Park three days a year, the 4th being one of them, so take advantage! Central Park’s bucolic gathering space, Sheep Meadow, is sure to be full of families and friends grilling it up this year.
