Overview of the Park
Located in front of the American Museum of Natural History, the verdant Theodore Roosevelt Park recently underwent a renovation that took nearly ten years. The park itself was established more than a century ago, and it encompasses about 18 acres of land with ample seating and leafy shade.
Originally designed by Calvert Vaux, the famed landscape architect who also helped to design Central Park, Theodore Roosevelt Park is a marvel of beloved urban green space.
About Theodore Roosevelt
What is now Theodore Roosevelt Park was known as Manhattan Square until 1958, when it was renamed by a local law. Roosevelt was a native New Yorker who became the youngest ever president of the United States, after William McKinley was assassinated. Outside of — and throughout — his political career, however, Roosevelt was also a devoted environmentalist. He led the creation of the National Zoo, helped form more than 50 national bird sanctuaries, and wrote some three dozen books that touch upon many natural topics.
It is very fitting that such an environmentalist and a native New Yorker would be forever memorialized with a beloved Upper West Side park.
Hidden Gems
“Dinosaur Park”
You may hear locals lovingly referring to Theodore Roosevelt Park as Dinosaur Park — but do you know why? It may seem like it clearly has to do with the nearby American Museum of Natural History, but the truth is a little more complicated than that. In fact, the land that is now Theodore Roosevelt Park was once intended for the museum itself, and building of the museum even began in the 1960s. The museum plans were abandoned (and transformed into the AMNH), but there are molds of dinosaurs left buried under the park even today.
Margaret Mead Green Lawn
Recent renovations enlarged the Margaret Mead Green Lawn, providing an extensive space for New Yorkers and visitors alike to sprawl out on nice spring, summer and autumn days and enjoy the sun. From picnicking to frisbee, the lawn is the perfect place to spend time with family and friends in warm weather. Boasting some 13,500 square feet of space, this lawn offers a wealth of opportunity to sunbathe, socialize, run around, and more.
Activities
Dog Run
One of the things Theodore Roosevelt Park is famous for is how dog-friendly it is. It is known for its dog run, first installed in the 1990s, which has a claim to fame as being one of the largest dog runs in Manhattan. Bring your dog, or, if you’re just in New York City to visit and you’re craving some interaction with those fluffy gems, head to Theodore Roosevelt Park to watch dogs of all breeds and sizes run around.
Manhattanhenge
If you have any interest in photography and New York City you’ve probably heard of Manhattanhenge, a summer phenomenon in which the setting sun aligns perfectly with New York City’s east-west grid of streets. 79th street, which runs to the middle of Theodore Roosevelt Park is a Manhattanhenge viewing favorite — thus the park is, too. This summer, if you’re in the area, head to Theodore Roosevelt Park on publicized Manhattanhenge days to enjoy the unforgettable view of the sun setting straight into New York City’s streets.
