America has many important Thanksgiving traditions: turkey, cranberry sauce, and fall-inspired decor. But one of the most important, projected on millions of TVs each year, is the iconic and beloved Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This festive extravaganza, with its magnificent floats, huge balloons, and equally dazzling performances and MCs, is a celebration of gratitude and holiday cheer.

If you plan on being in New York City during Thanksgiving, you are in for a treat. In this post, we'll explore the rich history of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, give you a sneak peek at what this year's parade — the 97th annual event — has in store, and provide important information on how to experience this spectacular event in person.

With a route beginning just a fourteen-minute walk away from The Wallace, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the perfect outing for guests.

History of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is an institution that has been enchanting viewers across the country for nearly a century. Though it’s  the second-oldest parade of its kind, it is inarguably the most famous.

It all began in 1924, when employees of Macy’s Herald Square, the department store’s flagship location, organized the first parade, featuring live animals from the Central Park Zoo, marching bands, and Santa Claus himself. That inaugural parade was a major success, drawing an estimated quarter of a million spectators.

Over the years, the parade has grown in size and extravagance. In 1927, the first giant balloon, Felix the Cat, made its debut, setting the stage for the enormous character balloons that would become one of the event’s most unique features. In 1948, the parade was first televised, allowing millions across the nation to join in the holiday festivities from the comfort of their homes.

Though the parade has undergone various changes over the years, its enduring charm lies in the way it captures the holiday spirit, uniting everyone in a shared sense of wonder and joy.

This Year’s Floats

The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade is renowned for its wide array of floats and balloons, each designed to tell a story or celebrate a beloved character. Here's a glimpse of what you can expect in this year's parade:

Tom Turkey

The longest-running, most iconic float of the parade, Tom Turkey is back again as the lead float. Since Tom Turkey first appeared in 1973, it has become a fan favorite. A simple, 21-foot-tall turkey that changes slightly in appearance every year, Tom Turkey retains its hardy spirit as the bringer of holiday cheer.

Sesame Street

Since 1974, Sesame Street-inspired floats have appeared in the parade some eighteen times. In 2019, to mark the 50th anniversary of the franchise, a special float featuring Big Bird, Elmo, and other beloved characters hit the streets. We’re not yet sure what this year’s Sesame Street float will bring, but it is sure to be exciting.

Celebration Gator

Thanks to the Louisiana Office of Tourism, a decked-out alligator will bring the spirit of the bayou to New York City this Thanksgiving. This 60-foot long celebration of Creole culture, New Orleans architecture, lavish Louisiana traditions, and more, is back for its third — and final — hurrah this year.

Magic Meets the Sea

Another float back for its third time around is Disney Cruise Line’s Magic Meets the Sea, a fantastical Mickey Mouse-inspired recreation of a cruise ship. In its past iterations, it has featured Disney characters and singing performances; this year will surely not disappoint.

Please note that these are just a taste of the many enchanting floats and balloons that will grace the parade route this year. Be prepared for all sorts of surprises and delights around every corner.

Every parade is also hosted by some celebrity guest MCs, which are yet to be announced this year.
